Erfan Elhami

Erfan Elhami is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Ottawa researching how organizations can understand and improve their decision-making using the event data their information systems produce every day. His work focuses on Decision Mining: discovering the rules and criteria that actually drive decisions inside business processes, rather than the ones documented on paper. He studies these questions in complex, real-world settings such as healthcare, where a single patient pathway unfolds through triage, imaging, and treatment, and involves several interrelated objects at once — the patient, clinical staff, diagnostic equipment, and test results — each with its own timeline and its own influence on what happens next. Capturing decisions in such settings is an active frontier of Process Mining, and his research contributes to extending the field toward these object-centric realities. Erfan holds a master’s degree in Enterprise Architecture and has both research and professional experience in Business Process Management and Enterprise Architecture. This background shapes his approach: he treats process improvement not as an isolated analytical exercise, but as part of how an organization’s processes, information systems, and strategy fit together.
