Hello everyone,

If you were planning to enroll in EBC5380 in the Fall of 2019, I regret to inform you that the course has been cancelled for this term.

For those of you who are completing a Master’s degree in the Business Stream, the effect to your program is minimal given that EBC5380 is an optional course among a long list of courses. The same applies to Ph.D. students.

For those of you who are completing a Master’s degree in the Technical Stream, then EBC5380 is an optional course in a shortlist of three courses (the two other courses are EBC5175 and EBC5389). Your program requires you to complete two out of these three courses. Due to the cancellation of EBC5380, and to maintain flexibility by giving you more options, we are introducing a new topics course titled Affective and Persuasive Computing (EBC6300). You can enroll in that course instead of EBC5300 and it would count towards the credits you need to complete for the list of three courses.

Please note that Ph.D. and Business Stream Master’s students can also complete this course towards their optional credits. Since this is a topics course, there are several sections of EBC6300. Each section covers a different topic (which is clearly indicated for each section). Therefore, please make sure you register to the course of the correct topic.

Since many of you are not familiar with the term Affective computing, here’s a short description: Affective computing (also referred to as emotional artificial intelligence) pertains to the study and development of machines that can recognize and respond to human emotions. There are numerous applications to this technology in healthcare, education, entertainment, and social robotics.

Please see below a description of the new course:

Overview of human affective models and affect modalities. Design and development of affect estimation algorithms using artificial intelligence. Modality fusion and multimodal affect estimation. Persuasive technology and its applications. Persuasion design and persuasive strategies. Application of persuasive strategies in serious gaming. Current challenges in the fields of affective computing and persuasive technology.
